I was recently asked why I no longer speak to a certain person. I gave an honest answer. Their response?
"Why don’t you be the bigger person and reach out?"
Ah, the classic guilt trip. As if being the bigger person always means being the one to mend the bridge, regardless of how many times that bridge has burned you before.
But here’s what I’ve learned: real growth isn’t about forcing a connection that no longer serves you.
People love to romanticize the idea of reconciliation. They assume that if you truly “let go,” you’ll keep extending an olive branch, hoping this time things will be different. But when a relationship has proven—time and time again—to be toxic, hurtful, or simply unfulfilling, stepping away isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.
If every conversation leads to the same arguments,
If boundaries are ignored,
If trust has been broken beyond repair,
If being in their presence drains you instead of lifts you up…
Then being the bigger person isn’t about reaching out. It’s about choosing peace over chaos.
Not every relationship needs a grand ending. Sometimes, the healthiest choice is quiet acceptance—understanding that not everyone is meant to walk with you forever. And that’s okay.
Does this mean you hold onto anger? No.
Does this mean you wish them harm? Absolutely not.
It just means you respect yourself enough to stop reopening wounds that never heal.
This lesson doesn’t just apply to personal relationships. In business—especially in my notary work—I see how essential clear boundaries are. Whether it’s a difficult client who constantly oversteps or someone who expects you to bend your standards, learning to say no is just as important as knowing when to say yes.
Peace isn’t about avoiding conflict at all costs. It’s about choosing which conflicts are worth your energy.
If someone questions why you’ve chosen distance, remember: you don’t owe an explanation to those who weren’t there for the moments that led to your decision.
Letting go is growth. Choosing yourself is strength. And knowing which chapters don’t need revisiting? That’s being the bigger person.
